How to Install a Split Rail Fence on a Hillside

Release time:2025-12-31    Click:30

Installing a split rail fence on a hillside requires a specific technique known as "stepping" to ensure the fence follows the natural contour of the land while remaining stable. Attempting to install the fence rails level on a slope will create large, unsightly gaps underneath and place undue stress on the posts. The correct method involves setting the fence posts vertically (plumb) into the ground, regardless of the slope. The rails are then installed between the posts at an angle that follows the grade, creating a series of steps down the hillside.

The process begins with marking the fence line and setting the corner and end posts first. For the line posts running down the slope, the distance between them will vary, and the height of the post above ground will change with the incline. Each post must be set deep enough to be stable. When installing the rails, they are cut to fit the specific distance between the posts on the slope. This creates a fence that looks natural and harmonious with the landscape. This stepped method not only looks better but also results in a much stronger and more secure fence, as each post is firmly anchored and the rails are not fighting the grade of the hill.
